Your Phone Can Do Things a Paper Map Can't. Why Aren't Parks Using It?
From Vignelli's Unigrid brochure to NFC tags at the trailhead — the arrival moment parks should be offering.
In 1977, designer Massimo Vignelli created the Unigrid brochure system for the National Park Service. It standardized park brochures into a single modular format—clean, elegant, and efficient. Nearly fifty years later, Vignelli’s system is still in use at over 400 NPS sites. It’s one of the most successful information design projects in American history.
It is also a folded piece of paper.
That’s not a criticism. Paper maps are great. They work without batteries, they don’t crash, and there’s something satisfying about unfolding one at a trailhead. But paper maps can’t tell you that the Notch Trail is closed due to a washout this morning. They can’t switch to Spanish because your phone knows that’s your language. They can’t show you which overlook has the best light at 4 PM. And they can’t tell the park anything about how visitors actually move through the landscape.
The National Park Service knows this. They’ve built the NPS App, which offers interactive maps and self-guided tours. Recreation.gov now handles digital passes and QR-based payments at campsites. These are real advances. But they all require the visitor to find and download the app before arriving, over what is often terrible cellular service. The gap isn’t digital capability—it’s the moment of arrival.
The arrival moment is everything. A visitor pulls into the parking lot. They have a phone in their pocket and questions on their mind: Which trail should I hike? How long will it take? Is that overlook worth the drive? What am I looking at when I get there?
Right now, the answer is a folded brochure or nothing. What if the answer were a tap?
NFC (Near Field Communication) tags are passive devices the size of a coin. They cost less than fifty cents. They require no power, no wiring, and no network connection. They work in rain, snow, and direct sunlight. A visitor taps their phone to the tag—mounted on existing signage, a kiosk panel, or a trailhead post—and their browser opens immediately to a mobile-optimized map with trail routes, conditions, interpretive content, and safety information. No app download. No account. No QR code to align in the sun. Two seconds from tap to content.
The outdoor recreation industry is already moving this direction. Iceland’s Nature Conservation Agency deployed QR-linked trail maps in 2025, reaching thousands of hikers. AllTrails now provides verified trail data through physical signage partnerships. Private campgrounds across the country are replacing paper maps with scan-based navigation. A 2025 survey found that 74% of outdoor travelers expect real-time digital navigation at parks and trails.
NFC has specific advantages over QR codes in outdoor environments. No camera alignment—visitors tap rather than scan, which works with gloved hands and in bright sunlight. Tags are smaller and less visually intrusive than QR placards. And unlike QR codes, NFC tags can’t be spoofed by pasting a malicious code over a legitimate one—a real security consideration for unattended outdoor locations.
The paper brochure isn’t going away. But the phone in the visitor’s pocket can extend what the brochure does: update in real time, speak every language, narrate the geology, and give the park data about how visitors actually use the space. The technology exists. The visitors are ready. The question is whether parks are.
